Physical disability

Causes

A physical disability can be congenital and be due to, for example, a cerebral palsy (CP), spina bifida or muscle disease. A physical disability can occur later in life due to illness, such as MS, RA, ALS and Parkinson's disease. Aging, stroke, or a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury can also cause a reduced ability to move. The loss of movement can be due to reduced strength, endurance, coordination, touch and/or impaired balance.

How can a physical disability affect everyday life?

Depending on how much impairment the individual has, there can be challenges with everything from using the hands to being able to sit or walk independently. Handling equipment in your home, at school or at a workplace can be difficult. Having to have the help of someone else to handle a smartphone, to control media, lighting and, for example, to open a door can restrict the individual's freedom, self-control and integrity.

Assistive technology for environmental control and communication

Abilia has products that can be handled with a customized control method. The individual can, for example, control a smartphone using a single control switch and software that navigates the mobile. This provides the opportunity to control apps and to stay in touch with loved ones and be involved in society. With the included transmitter unit, it is possible to control e.g. TV, lighting and doors from your mobile. If it is not suitable to control from your own mobile phone, we have a large selection of remote controls that can be programmed against the media and separate receivers that are connected to lighting and doors etc.

Abilia's remote controls and receivers are medical devices with high quality and safety. They are adapted not only based on different movement impairments, but also for cognitive impairments and impaired vision. Research shows that users can gain greater independence, feel more secure and in control, and increase privacy.
